Fonts Not Displaying Correctly

  • On my various websites, I often use the fonts Pristina, Lucida Handwriting Italic, Lucida Calligraphy Italic for headings & navigation bars. These are not 'websafe' fonts - meaning that not all computers have them installed.
  • If the fonts on my sites look overly plain, odd, or distorted on your computer, then your computer probably doesn't have these fonts installed.

If you wish to optimize your experience on my websites, please install the following fonts:
Pristina, Lucida Handwriting Italic, Lucida Calligraphy Italic.
  • An easy way to get these fonts is to copy them from a computer that already has them installed; then transfer the copy to your computer by email, burning it to cd, using a flash drive, etc.
    Or download them here.

Many paid-for programs - such as Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Word - come with a font set that usually includes the 3 fonts I've mentioned here. They install automatically when you install the program on your computer.
  • You can also buy fonts individually from reputable sources. A paid-for font can be a higher quality font than a free version.

Fontonic www.fontonic.com is a site that has many fonts available to download for free.
Fontonic also gives instructions on how to install your new font to your computer.
  • Installing a font is simple - it's usually a matter of adding the new font file to your existing Fonts folder.
With some operating systems you can simply open the font temporarily without installing it while you browse the web.
    See the instructions below.

Downloading Fonts

If you wish, you can download all three of the fonts together by clicking here (.zip).
Or download each one separately below:

To save files for installation: Click a file above & Save to your computer.

  • If you downloaded the zip folder, unzip it & extract the files.
(If you don't know how to unzip files, download the fonts individually using the links above.)
  • With some operating systems you can simply click on a font file, select Open (instead of Save), and an installation button will appear when you open the font.
  • Follow the installation instructions below.

If you don't wish to save & install the files, there is a more temporary solution for some operating systems:

  • Simply open the font files.
Click a font link above, click Open when prompted.
Leave the file open while you are browsing the web.
  • You should be able to see the font magically display without installing the file on your computer.
You will need to restart your browser after opening the font files for the changes to take effect.
  • If the temporary solution doesn't work, you will need to actually install the font onto your computer.

Always be cautious when downloading anything from the web. Make sure your virus protection & spyware programs are up-to-date, and scan downloaded files before installing them.

How to Install True Type Fonts
http://www.fontonic.com/installfonts.asp

Windows Vista/7:
If downloading from this website, Left-click to Open the file (without saving it) and click the Install button that appears. Or save the file to your computer, open the font file(s) (.ttf, .otf or .fon) and click the Install button that appears.

Windows XP/2000/98:
Copy and Paste the font files (.ttf, .otf or .fon) into Windows Fonts folder. Could be on C:\Windows\Fonts or C:\WINNT\Fonts. [Or open your Control Panel and see if there's a folder there named Fonts.]

Mac OS X 10.3 or above: Double-click fonts then click on Install font button at the bottom of the preview.

Any version of Mac OS X:
Put the files into /Library/Fonts (for all users), or into /Users/Your_username/Library/Fonts (for you only).

Mac OS 9 or earlier:
- Drag fonts into the System folder. System will ask you to add them to the Fonts folder.
- Copy and Paste fonts (.ttf or .otf) into fonts:/// in the File manager.

To use a new font, it's necessary to relaunch the application [in this case, your browser] to be able to see it.
